CNN —It’s 420 or “weed day,” and people around the world will be paying homage to their favorite guilty pleasure: marijuana. “I worry when people are in an enclosed space because new data is beginning to show that secondhand marijuana smoke may be just as dangerous as the primary smoke,” Page said. “Approximately 3 in 10 people who use marijuana have marijuana use disorder,” according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, some parents told doctors they believed vaping marijuana was safer than tobacco, Boyd told CNN earlier via email. A cloud of marijuana smoke rises as a clock hits 4:20 p.m. during the Mile High 420 Festival in Denver on "weed day" in 2022.

CNN —Multiple people on an American Airlines flight pulled a fellow passenger to the floor after he tried to open one of the emergency exits, forcing the plane to return to Albuquerque, New Mexico, shortly after takeoff, according to multiple passengers. As of Sunday, there have been more than 250 unruly passenger incidents reported to the FAA by flight crews this year, according to the agency. The incident Tuesday began about twenty minutes into the flight, passenger Zach Etkind told CNN. Multiple passengers got the man to the ground and flight attendants restrained him with duct tape and flexi cuffs, Etkind said. And in November, a man on a Southwest Airlines flight opened an emergency exit door and climbed onto the plane’s wing while the aircraft was at a gate in New Orleans.

A lawsuit says a "whistling sound" previously came from the door plug of the Alaska Airlines blowout jet. BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union lawmakers called on Thursday for an independent investigation into allegations of vote-rigging in Serbia and demanded that EU funds be cut off if the authorities in Belgrade fail to cooperate with the inquiry or are found to be implicated in election irregularities. The governing Serbian Progressive party of populist Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić won the Dec. 17 parliamentary and municipal elections, securing 129 seats in the 250-seat assembly. The opposition Serbia Against Violence coalition finished a distant second with 65 seats. The resolution has angered Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić. Vučić’s ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his failure to enforce EU sanctions on Moscow have dismayed many.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A “whistling sound” was heard on a previous flight of the Boeing 737 Max 9 whose door plug blew out during an Alaska Airlines flight last month, an attorney representing passengers in a lawsuit said in new court documents. On Wednesday, he filed an amended complaint that adds 18 additional passenger plaintiffs and includes the new allegations concerning the previous flight. He did not specify who they were and declined to confirm whether they were passengers or crew members on the previous flight. He also declined to specify when the previous flight occurred. She cautioned, however, that the pressurization light might be unrelated to the door plug blowout.

On Monday, Joel announced he’ll be releasing his first new pop single in nearly two decades next week. While listening to “The Stranger” over the weekend, I found myself considering the pop musical whistle. It’s such a simple expression, but in a song it can convey a wide range of feelings and tones. While we await Joel’s latest, “Turn the Lights Back On” (which may or may not feature a whistle break), today’s playlist is a homage to the pop musical whistle, in all its glory and multitudes. And if you don’t know how to whistle along, you can always consult Lauren Bacall.

It shows Bennetts first trying to throw a rescue disc tethered to a rope out to the man. LARNACA, Cyprus (AP) — Tomer Bassis expected his day to be filled with electronic trance music at the Oct. 7 desert rave party he was attending in southern Israel. The open-air Tribe of Nova music festival is believed to be the worst civilian massacre in Israeli history, with at least 364 dead. In a single day, Hamas and other Palestinian militants killed about 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians, and took around 240 people captive. The trips to Cyprus are supported by NovaHelp, a group of mental heath professionals who came together to help survivors of the rave party, said Raskin. Raskin has initiated another, similar project currently underway to bring parents who lost children during the Oct. 7 attack to undergo similar therapy in Cyprus.

Anwar and his cousin, Mourad Atta, 17, are among the 180 Palestinian teenagers and women freed from Israeli prisons in recent days, the largest such release of prisoners and detainees in more than a decade. A Chill in the Air and Chili in Your Pot

Chili season gets underway in my house after the first day I am well and truly chilled on my daily bike ride north along the harbor, wind whistling out of the west as if to knock me over. That sure wasn’t yesterday, not in New York! But as Mr. Martin wrote, “Winter is coming.” Sometimes I like a classic chili con carne to warm me up afterward, and always this firehouse chili gumbo. Lately, though, I’ve been thrilling to Pierre Franey’s turkey chili (above), which I make with ground turkey and, freestyling, a bunch of cubed turkey thighs that I think add a welcome textural contrast to the stew. (Chili is endlessly adaptable to your tastes and ingredients, as detailed in my guide to making the dish.)

US grand strategy can prop up the global order
  + stars: | 2023-10-16 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
But the United States can prevent the rules-based order from collapsing if it keeps steering a steady course with regards to Russia and China. If the United States holds firm on its grand strategy, any new geopolitical risks should be similarly contained. One explanation for the current outbreak of crises is that the United States is weaker and more internally divided than it was during the so-called “Pax Americana” era. It could easily drop down the United States’ list of priorities, says Michel Duclos, a former French diplomat who is a fellow at the Paris-based Institut Montaigne. He will struggle to unite the U.S.’s allies as he is not a champion of either the NATO military alliance or the rules-based global order.
